The scent of hope

In the fight against cancer, the most remarkable breakthroughs come from surprising places. One such innovation involves using dogs and their incredible sense of smell to detect cancer. While this idea may sound unusual, it’s backed by both fascinating stories and solid scientific research.

Volatile organic compounds

Cancer cells release unique chemicals called volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which have distinct smells. These compounds are different from those produced by healthy cells because cancer cells behave differently in the body. VOCs can be found in a person’s breath, urine, blood, or even on their skin, creating a chemical fingerprint of disease.

Scientists have identified over 1 800 VOCs linked to cancer using advanced tools like gas chromatography- mass spectrometry (GC-MS). For example, studies have shown that certain VOCs, such as 1-butanol and hexanal, are more common in the breath of people with lung cancer. Even better, these changes can be detected in the early stages of cancer when treatment is most effective.

A dog’s ability to detect cancer lies in their extraordinary sense of smell. They have around 300 million scent receptors in their noses compared to just 5–6 million in humans. Their brains are also uniquely structured to process smells, allowing them to detect even the tiniest amounts of cancer-related VOCs, sometimes as little as a few parts per trillion.

A brief history of dogs as cancer companions

The idea of using our canine companions to detect cancer began by chance. In 1989, a dog persistently sniffed a mole on its owner’s leg, leading to the discovery of melanoma, a type of skin cancer.

Studies have shown that trained dogs can identify cancers in samples of urine, breath, and other bodily fluids with impressive accuracy. For instance, in 2008, a ground-breaking study showed that dogs could detect bladder cancer in urine samples with a 41% success rate—far better than the 14% expected by random chance.

Since then, the canine effort has only become stronger. In 2015, a study found that two highly-trained German Shepherds could almost perfectly identify prostate cancer in urine samples. Similarly, research, in 2018, revealed that dogs could detect lung cancer in breath samples with an impressive accuracy of up to 99%.

Trans-disciplinary and multi-species teams

The incorporation of our canine companions could revolutionise cancer detection. It’s non-invasive, affordable, and may help spot cancer early, improving survival rates.

However, challenges remain, such as ensuring consistent training methods for detection dogs. Additionally, it’s essential to ensure that detection dogs are treated ethically, with their well-being prioritised in both research and diagnostic work.

While dogs are unlikely to replace traditional diagnostic tools, they have enormous potential as a helpful addition. They could be especially useful for screening people at high-risk of cancer or double-checking results from advanced technologies like GC-MS. Researchers are even developing artificial noses that aim to match the remarkable accuracy of canine detection. These innovations could one day make cancer screening more accessible and effective worldwide.

In the meantime, the bond between humans and dogs continues to grow in extraordinary ways. Beyond being loyal companions, dogs might hold the key to detecting cancer earlier, more affordably, and less invasively than ever before. Their incredible sense of smell, paired with the dedication of scientists, offers a powerful reminder of the untapped potential in our natural world—where every breath could hold a clue, and every sniff could save a life.
