A sunny day feels great, especially when enjoyed with family and friends. But with fun in the sun comes responsibility. Protecting skin from harmful ultraviolet (UV) light exposure is as much a part of a healthy lifestyle as staying active and eating right.

Actinic keratosis can develop following years of exposure to the sun. It’s the most common pre-cancer on the skin, potentially progressing into non-melanoma skin cancer (squamous cell carcinoma) if left untreated. Actinic keratosis is caused by frequent or intense exposure to UV rays from the sun or tanning beds.

Eucerin Sun has introduced the new Actinic Control Fluid SPF 100 that helps prevent actinic keratosis and non-melanoma skin cancer. It should also be used in combination with treatment for actinic keratosis. It can also be recommended by your doctor following dermatological skin treatments, such as laser or chemical peels, when sun protection is paramount.

How does it protect you from the sun?

The higher the SPF, the more UVB rays are blocked out which are a major cause of cell damage. The more UVB rays are blocked out, the less cell damage the skin will accumulate during sun exposure. An SPF 100, for example, blocks out about 99% of UVB rays. Additionally, the high SPF 100 can also compensate for sunscreen under-application.

The light textured fluid feels pleasant on the skin and absorbs quickly, making it comfortable to use every day while you go about your day and enjoy the outdoors.

Three steps to optimal sun protection

1. Select the right product

Choose a product that offers the right level of protection for your skin. It should protect against UVB and UVA rays and be suitable for your skin condition. Do not stay too long in the sun, even while using a sun protection product.

2. Use the right amount

It’s important to use a sufficient amount of product, which is 2mg per cm² of skin and reapply it at regular intervals. You can use your finger to roughly measure how much you need. A finger length equates to roughly two grams of product. Apply every morning.

In case of direct sun exposure reapply every two hours, especially after swimming, perspiring, or towelling to maintain the original protection. Reducing the quantity will lower the level of protection significantly.

3. Apply thoroughly

Ensure that all exposed areas get the protection they need. Some parts are easy to miss. Do not forget the ears, the back of the neck, the back and shoulders, the backs of the arms, hands and feet and the areas at the edges of swimwear.

Allow to absorb completely and avoid direct contact with textiles and hard surfaces to prevent staining. Avoid contact with the eyes and mucous membranes. In case of accidental eye contact, please rinse with lukewarm water and contact a physician if symptoms persist.
